Backyard Garden Update - 8 March 2014

Assalamualaikum.

Last week The Gartner ambil cuti pada hari Jumaat dan temankan The Wife ke team-building di Port Dickson, jadi Backyard Garden ditinggalkan tanpa tuan selama 2 hari. Cuaca di Kajang masih lagi kering, so The Gartner hanya berharap kesemua pokok dapat survive sendiri sebab tak ada orang nak tolong siramkan.

Sampai sahaja ke rumah pada petang Sabtu, terus The Gartner ke belakang rumah to check the condition of all the plants. Hmm..almost kesemuanya layu kehausan. Cepat-cepat The Gartner bagi semua minum sebelum snap gambar-gambar kat bawah ni.

Kailan & pak choy layu, kobis cina steady saja.
Pak Choy yang kelayuan.
Surprisingly, anak Tomato Cherry Red dalam container 20L dan 45L steady sahaja walaupun tanah dah kering kontang. Actually, sepanjang di PD, the 4 of them yang paling The Gartner risaukan sekali disebabkan masih kecil. Tak sangka pula semuanya selamba sahaja melayan kemarau.

The Gartner saja yang tak ada masa nak mix tanah to put them all in.

Tomato Cherry XX, 8 March 2014
Pokok Tomato XX bukan sahaja layu, tetapi patah ditiup angin.

Insyaallah, nanti The Gartner akan kongsikan. Sebenarnya memang ada main tipu sikit. Tapi The Gartner akan ceritakan kesemuanya nanti. Hee.

Cherry Tomato masak ranum.

So, in total, 55 biji cherry tomato dipetik in one go. So far, inilah harvest yang paling banyak sekali sepanjang The Gartner menanam Cherry Tomato ini. Alhamdulillah.

OK. That's all for now.

Tips on hacking your tomato plants akan dishare kemudian. Haha.

Until later. Gardening Rocks.

Backyard Garden Update - 5 March 2014

Assalamualaikum.

Minggu pertama bulan Mac ini agak sibuk sampaikan The Gartner tak sempat nak update what have happened the week before.

Pokok Cili Bara menggantikan Tomato XX.
Hopefully all of them menjadi sama seperti Cherry Tomato yang sedia ada di Backyard Garden. The Gartner akan updatekan their condition from time to time.

Raised bed yang sebelum ini occupied by anak-anak pak choy di kedua-dua belah, The Gartner kemaskan dan pindahkan supaya penuh di satu bahagian sahaja. Bahagian yang kosong kemudiaannya dibaja semula - menunggu penghuni baru yang The Gartner sendiri belum pasti.

Raised bed yang telah dikemaskan.
Anak pak choy ditanam bersama-sama pak choy tua.
So, cepat-cepat The Gartner cabut dan buang pokok ini.

Hee.

My Harvest, 26 February 2014
Throughout the week, buah cherry tomato sudah mula masak ranum and on 2 March, The Gartner petik mana yang sudah masak bersama-sama cili bara, tomato XX yang tumbang dan juga sebiji bendi dari pokok yang baru dipangkas.

So, that's all for now. Until later.

Cat-tails Memory

Assalamualaikum.

From what I could recall, I've been gardening since I was a small kid. Most of my gardening activities would consist of repotting my mother's plants, digging holes and pulling out all the weeds around the garden. Basically, just that.

When planting new plants, my mother would wait for me to do it all because she said if I'm the one who planted it, it will grow healthily, because of my green thumb. I always thought so. Perhaps, it's just my mother's way to get his son to accompany her with her hobby. Somehow, my father is not very keen on gardening.

When I was in Universiti Putra Malaysia, my roommate for 3 straight years is this guy named Epoy and he's got quite a very peculiar sense of art when it comes to decorating our room. He would borrow so many books from the library and put it in on the rack so it would 'look good' and put coins & beans in small jars to be displayed on the his table. Also, how-about-stick-some-cool-photos-on-the-wall-to-impress-people-coming-to-our-room kind of thing. *Hahaa..I'm not even sorry for bad-mouthing you.

This is Epoy. Haha.
Being a good friend, I just get into his rhythm - and inject in a bit of my own 'insanity'.

While others would be on the football field or the basketball court, the both of us, on many occasion would scour the campus for plants to be planted inside the room. Not just ordinary plants you would find planted on the road curbs by the landscaper, but more likely wild weeds and tall grasses from the swampy part of UPM.

Photo of one of the plants we have in the room.
We would put them in glasses or any suitable container and let it grow inside the room. Sometimes, he would take photographs of them and heavily edit them on Photoshop to make it look stunning. Here's some from what's left of his artworks. Hehee.

Butterfly-like plant which we don't really know what the name is.
We have our fun, in our own ways.

During this part of my life I discovered that I truly have the capability to actually plant something and take care of it until it reach its worth. One one occasion, we planted a tall grass (which I later identified as cat-tails grass) inside the room in a candy container and all our friends would come and say its a bit crazy for us to do that. We took pride on that knowing that we are a bit different from them. One day, the plant started to produce its seed - the tail - and we are very much amazed that it have the ability to grow in such a condition - inside a small room, in a candy container by the window.

This is how cat-tails grass looks like.
After a few weeks, I came back from the class one day to find out that our room was filled with small, hairy, white flying cat-tails grass seeds. It was literally everywhere - on the bed, on the PC, on our clothes, all over the floor - and the room was a mess.

This is how it looks before it bursts.
We have a good laugh on how stupid we were to ignore it when the seed seems like its ready to explode - alas, we left the window wide open - so the seeds were flown into the room instead of away from it. A good memory indeed.

To my best-friend Mohamad Saifol Bin Aaisa whom is currently in Jubail, Saudi Arabia - thanks for all the laughter we shared back then. May God bless you. May your laughs cheer up all your new friends there. Haha.

When you're back in Malaysia, feel free to drop by my Backyard Garden. Hopefully, by then, the tomatoes are all red and the greens are plentiful.

Thanks.

My Tomatoes Update - 27 February 2014

Assalamualaikum.

This is apa yang tertinggal daripada pokok cherry tomato yang merimbun sebelum ini. Sebelum ini, The Gartner boleh dapat up around 6-8 biji tomato pada setiap tangkai namun begitu kadar penghasilan buah sudah semakin menurun. However, this week there's some positive indication yang productionnya semakin meningkat.

Hopefully most of it could set fruit despite this unforgiving weather.

Cepat-cepat The Gartner ambil dan penyetkan. Hee. So, kena perhatikan juga mealybugs ini so kalau ada infestation dapat dikawal dari peringkat awal.

Mealybugs mencuba untuk infest cherry tomato.
So, this is my Yellow Pear Cherry Tomato yang baru belajar berbunga. I'm hoping to see some fruits just to make sure it really is a Yellow Pear, bukannya cherry tomato jenis lain.

The Gartner nak kena tunggu a few more days dan prepare bekas yang sepatutnya.

Haha. Alhamdulillah. Rezeki daripada Allah.

Apart from that, ada satu pokok Black Eyed Peas daripada pek kacang yang The Gartner belikan untuk The Baby juga tumbuh. Asalnya, sebiji kacang jatuh ke lantai dan terbiar semalaman so bila The Gartner terjumpa esoknya, The Gartner cucukkan ke dalam tanah semaian Sungold disebabkan sudah frust. Tak sangka pula anak pokok kacang dan anak pokok tomato tumbuh serentak. Haha.

I'm not really sure, mungkin juga baja foliarku sudah expired.

As for my Mini Cucumber, The Gartner rasa macam perlu abort disebabkan kadar pertumbuhan yang sangat tidak menggalakkan. Tempatnya di atas tanah pula mungkin to be taken over by my Red Cherry Tomato.

So, that's all for now. Just to capture the progress of my beloved tomatoes. Haha.

OK. Thanks for reading. Gardening Rocks!
